Location

The City of Baxter applied for a BlueCross Healthy Place grant to bring an inclusive, multi-generational space to their area. The BlueCross Healthy Place is the first park of its kind in the area, and residents hope it will serve locals and visitors for years to come.

Harris Court is a 2-acre municipal park located off Main Street in Bean Station. The town applied for BlueCross Healthy Place funding in the hopes of bringing additional amenities and encouraging community enrichment in the space, which is a gathering spot for residents of all ages and abilities. 
The BlueCross Healthy Place at Harris Court Park features a fully accessible, inclusive play space for children of all abilities. The main play structure is a fully ramped system allowing for a variety of play experiences at different levels. In addition to the main structure, there are several ground-level activities, including accessible swings and a spinning whirl. 
Harris Court Park is located next to the Bean Station Senior Center. Fitness equipment in the BlueCross Healthy Place has been designed specifically to provide extra support for active, older adults who want to improve or maintain strength, balance and flexibility.

Henry Horton State Park is located between Chattanooga and Nashville in Chapel Hill, TN. The park sits on 1,140 along the Duck River, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in North America.
The BlueCross Healthy Place at Henry Horton State Park celebrates the nature and the history of the area. It includes two accessible play areas: one for children 2-5 and 5-12. Both spaces include ramp access, specially designed equipment and a soft rubber safety surface for children who use mobility devices.
Adjacent to the play areas is a discovery trail and several play pods that teach children about area wildlife and the park’s history.

The BlueCross Healthy Place at Highland Park is a partnership between the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation and three local charter schools: Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy, Chattanooga Preparatory School and the Montessori School at Highland Park.
It is the first BlueCross Healthy Place to be completed on privately owned land and is shared by the schools and Highland Park community members.
The space includes a sports field with bleachers, a challenge course, basketball and tennis courts, and accessible play areas.

Huntland is a rural town with a population of just over 800 located slightly north of the Alabama-Tennessee state line. Community members wanted a new accessible playground in the town center.
The BlueCross Healthy Place at Huntland City Park is home to a fenced playground with accessible equipment for children of all abilities – just as residents requested.
But it’s more than that.
The space also includes a basketball court with bleachers, outdoor fitness equipment, a new walking track, sway benches, additional parking, water fountains, picnic tables and grills.

The BlueCross Healthy Place at the Kingsport Miracle League Complex features inclusive play structures, along with multisensory playground components and a safety surface. Like the rest of the complex, the BlueCross Healthy Place is specially designed for youth, young adults and other visitors with special needs.
The Kingsport Miracle League Complex is the first facility of its kind in northeast Tennessee. Designed to help youth and young adults with physical and developmental challenges enjoy the game of baseball, the complex also features a baseball field with a rubberized surface, a pavilion and a concessions area.

East Knoxville is a diverse area near downtown that’s rich in history and has long been a center of African-American culture. The Legacy Parks Foundation applied for a BlueCross Healthy Place grant to enhance the features in Morningside Park, a well-loved, 36-acre community space, and to help improve the overall health of area residents.
The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation invested $5.5 million to build the first BlueCross Healthy Place in the Knoxville area.

Our first BlueCross Healthy Place was the $5.4 million revitalization of a historic Memphis park. 
Whitehaven residents had already shared their desire for improved resources in their local park. We held a community meeting and a planning event at the local elementary school to gather input and ideas that directly influenced the final design of the new park.
The completed space has several new features, including a splash pad, accessible playground and a blacksmith play area, honoring park namesake David Carnes, one of the first Black landowners in the area.
